National Farmers Day

National Farmers Day was meaningfully observed on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, from 11.00 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. at the Swami Vivekananda Block of Thoothukudi Kamaraj College (Autonomous). The programme was organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS) Units 54, 55, 56, and 145 at the Botany Laboratory with the objective of honouring farmers and creating awareness about the importance of agriculture in national development.

The observance reflected the institution’s commitment to social responsibility, environmental awareness, and value-based education, aligning with the broader goals of higher education and community engagement.

Significance of National Farmers Day

National Farmers Day is observed every year in India on 23 December to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and a strong advocate of farmers’ welfare and agrarian reforms. The day highlights the indispensable role played by farmers in ensuring food security and sustaining the rural economy.

The observance emphasized respect for agricultural labour and encouraged students to recognize farming as a noble and essential profession. It also highlighted the relevance of sustainable agricultural practices in addressing contemporary challenges such as climate change and food scarcity.
