The Department of History was established in the year 1976 with the introduction of the Undergraduate (B.A. History) programme. Since its inception, the department has been committed to fostering critical historical thinking and an informed understanding of India’s cultural and political evolution.
From the academic year 2019–2020 onwards, the medium of instruction for B.A. History has been offered in Tamil. This significant shift was made to enhance accessibility for rural and first-generation learners, and it also enables students to gain preference in Tamil Nadu Government job opportunities under the PSTM (Persons Studied in Tamil Medium) scheme.
The department further expanded its academic offerings by introducing the M.A. History program under the self-supporting stream in 2013, followed by the launch of the self-supporting B.A. History stream in 2016. These programs cater to the growing demand for higher studies in history and support students aspiring for careers in academics, public service, and research.
At present, the department is supported by a dedicated team of 10 faculty members, of whom 3 serve under the aided stream, while the remaining contribute through the self-supporting stream. The collective expertise and enthusiasm of the faculty continue to shape students into informed, socially responsible citizens with a strong grounding in historical knowledge.
