The Department of Tamil has been an integral part of the college since its establishment in 1966. As one of the foundational departments, it has consistently played a vital role in nurturing the linguistic and cultural heritage of Tamil. From its inception, the department has been offering Part I Tamil to all undergraduate students across various disciplines, fostering strong language skills and cultural awareness among the student community.
The department is staffed by a committed team of 14 faculty members, out of which 4 serve under the aided stream, while the remaining contribute through the self-supporting stream. The collective expertise and dedication of the faculty have led to significant academic accomplishments, including the successful guidance of 26 Ph.D. scholars and over 200 M.Phil. students, which stands as a testament to the department’s academic strength and mentorship.
In the year 2016, the department expanded its academic offerings by introducing the B.A. Tamil Literature programme under the self-financed stream. This initiative was a major step in providing a platform for students passionate about Tamil language, literature, and culture to pursue in-depth study and research.
