7 Days NSS Special Camp: 25 Inspiring Community Service Activities
Introduction
The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit No. 55, Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, successfully organised a 7 Days NSS Special Camp at Podammalpuram Village, under Kulaiyankarisal Panchayat, from 26 July to 1 August 2026.
The 7 Days NSS Special Camp aimed to promote community service, environmental conservation, health awareness, rural development and personality development among NSS volunteers. Throughout the seven days, the volunteers actively participated in meaningful service activities that strengthened their leadership qualities, teamwork and social responsibility in line with the NSS motto, “Not Me, But You.”
Day 1 – Camp Inauguration and Preparations
The volunteers arrived at the 7 Days NSS Special Camp venue and completed accommodation and logistical arrangements under the guidance of Dr. P. Pounraj, Programme Officer, NSS Unit No. 55.
After receiving the support and blessings of the village elders and Panchayat administration, the volunteers cleaned the 7 Days NSS Special Camp premises and made all necessary preparations for the successful conduct of the week long camp.
Day 2 – Cleanliness and Public Awareness
The second day focused on the theme of Cleanliness Awareness.
The volunteers cleaned the Panchayat Office, VAO Office, Self Help Group building, school drinking water tank and surrounding public areas by removing waste, weeds and thorny bushes. They also conducted awareness programmes on hygiene, sanitation and environmental protection and carried out a door to door campaign to invite villagers to the Free Eye Screening Camp.
Day 3 – Health Awareness and Medical Camp
The volunteers began the day with physical exercises and a visit to the village library.
A Free Eye Screening Camp was organised in collaboration with Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Thoothukudi, benefiting many villagers. During the afternoon, a World Hepatitis Day Awareness Programme was organised in association with AM Foundation, where medical experts educated the public about liver health, hepatitis prevention, vaccination and early diagnosis. The day’s activities concluded with a review meeting to plan the following day’s programmes.
Day 4 – Tree Plantation and Student Competitions
The volunteers visited the Panchayat Nursery and learned nursery management and sapling maintenance techniques.
More than 50 tree saplings representing 10 different species were planted at schools, public offices and other important locations in the village. In the afternoon, literary and cultural competitions including Speech, Poetry, Essay Writing and Group Dance were organised for school students on the themes “Kamarajar – The Visionary Who Opened the Eyes of Education” and “Let Us Protect Nature.”
Day 5 – Campus Cleaning and Agricultural Awareness
The volunteers cleaned the campus of T.D.T.A. Abisheganathar Higher Secondary School and planted additional tree saplings.
A cleanliness drive was also carried out at Abisheganathar Temple and its surroundings. During the evening, the volunteers interacted with local farmers to learn about farming practices, crop cultivation and organic agriculture.
Day 6 – Sports and Motivational Sessions
Sports competitions were organised for students of the Panchayat Union Primary School, followed by prize distribution by the Panchayat Office Clerk and village elders.
Later, Dr. Ashok, Professor of English, and Dr. Bilal, Professor of History, motivated the volunteers through interactive sessions on leadership and community service. Dr. A. Veliappan, NSS Coordinator of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, visited the camp, reviewed the activities and appreciated the volunteers for their dedicated service.
Day 7 – Agricultural Learning and Camp Valediction
On the final day, the volunteers visited agricultural fields and learned about banana cultivation, paddy cultivation, crop protection and organic farming directly from experienced local farmers.
The volunteers expressed their gratitude to the Panchayat administration and village residents for their support throughout the 7 Days NSS Special Camp. After cleaning and handing over the camp premises, they shared their experiences and reflections before concluding the camp with renewed commitment to community service and nation building.
