Workshop on Econometric Analysis using SPSS – Economics Dept.

A One-day workshop on “ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS USING SPSS” was conducted by PG & Research Department of Economics, Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi on 21st March, 2024. P.S.P.K. Somasundaram @ Somu, Secretary, Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi and Dr. J.Poongodi, Principal, Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi were the Chief Patron, the Patron of the workshop. Dr.A.Asok, Associate Professor and Head had convenor of the workshop. The primary aim of organizing the workshop is to enable research scholars (belonging to social sciences and humanities) to conduct their research work in a scientific and systematic manner. The course (for the workshop) was designed by the coordinator Dr. A.Govindharaju, Assistant Professor cum Organizing Secretary, PG and Research Department of Economics, Kamaraj College to achieve the aim. A number of 48 participants, were participated in the programme. As per the schedule, the workshop began on 21th March 2024 sharp at 11.00 a.m. with a special address by Dr. A.Asok, Associate Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of Economics, Kamaraj College, Tamil Nadu whereby he made the participants aware about the theme of the workshop, and the rationale behind it in social context. He further gave a brief overview of the one-day workshop to the participants to add more clarity to the participants apart from familiarity. P.Vimalaeth, M.A. Economics, PG & Research Department of Economics, Kamaraj College welcomed the participants and introduced the resource persons of Session.
The session of the workshop on “Econometric Analysis using SPSS, Theoretical Framework and Hypothesis Development” was chaired by Dr.S.Amuthan, Guest Lecture, Department of Economics, Government Arts and Science College, Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi Tamil Nadu spoke on “Sampling Design and Testing of Hypothesis”. The lecture started with the question of a researcher’s preference of sampling to collection of data due to the limitations of time and money. He explained the meaning of Sampling as the procedure of drawing samples and Sampling Frame as the list of all the elements in the Finite population. He clarified the stages in selecting sampling namely defining target population, selecting sampling frame, determining the use of Probability or Non-Probability sampling methods, the procedure for selecting sampling unit, determining the sample size, selecting actual sampling units and conducting fieldwork were perfectly described. He then explained Quantitative (Random) and Qualitative (Non-Random) Sampling methods and different types of Quantitative methods like Simple Random sampling, Systematic sampling, Stratified Random sampling, and Cluster sampling. He also explained the types of Non-Random Sampling methods like Convenience sampling, Purposive sampling, Quota sampling, and Snowball sampling. In addition, he explained about the descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, the meaning of significance level and confidence level, null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis, importance of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and its use in the research done by various researchers for complex statistical data analysis. The Professor also discussed the importance and the application of t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square, Correlation, Regression, Factor Analysis and Cluster. The Valedictory Ceremony of the workshop on “Econometric Analysis using SPSS” (21st March, 2024) was held at 1.15 P.M. Dr. S.Amuthan, Guest Lecture, Government Arts and Science College, Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi was the Chief Guest of the function and delivered valedictory address. Participants, Faculty members and research scholars attended the function. The organizing Secretary, Dr.A.Govindharaju, presented a consolidated report of the workshop and thanked the authorities of Kamaraj College, all the faculty members, non-teaching staff and participants for their cooperation towards the successful conduct of the workshop.
