NSS Guidance Programme: Inspiring 120 Volunteers for Service
NSS Guidance Programme was organised by NSS Units 54 and 56 of Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, on 24 August 2026. The programme aimed to help NSS volunteers understand the objectives, activities and social responsibilities of the National Service Scheme and motivate them to participate actively in community service.
A total of 120 NSS volunteers from Units 54 and 56 participated in the programme. Moreover, the session gave students an opportunity to learn about NSS from the experience of a former Programme Officer and a student volunteer who had participated in the seven-day Special Camp.
Objectives of the NSS Guidance Programme
The NSS Guidance Programme aimed to introduce volunteers to the values and purpose of the National Service Scheme while preparing them for active participation in its activities.
The key objectives included:
- Create awareness about the origin and importance of NSS
- Explain the roles and responsibilities of NSS volunteers
- Encourage active participation in NSS activities
- Promote community and public service among students
- Share practical experiences from the NSS Special Camp
- Develop teamwork, leadership and social responsibility

Thus, the programme provided new and continuing volunteers with useful guidance for their involvement in NSS.
Welcome Address
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Mr. Anand, Programme Officer, NSS Unit 54.
He warmly welcomed the special guest, Programme Officers and student volunteers. Furthermore, his address highlighted the importance of understanding the purpose of NSS before participating in its various activities.
Special Address by Dr. Chandra
Dr. Chandra, former NSS Programme Officer of Kamaraj College and Assistant Professor of Economics, participated as the special guest and delivered an informative guidance session.
Drawing from her experience as a former NSS Programme Officer, she explained the origin and importance of the National Service Scheme. She also discussed how NSS provides students with opportunities to understand society and contribute meaningfully to community development.
Her interaction helped volunteers gain a broader understanding of the purpose behind NSS activities.
Roles and Responsibilities of NSS Volunteers
During the NSS Guidance Programme, Dr. Chandra explained the important roles and responsibilities expected of an NSS volunteer.
She encouraged students to participate actively in programmes related to community welfare and public service. In addition, she highlighted the importance of discipline, teamwork, commitment and responsible participation.
The session helped students understand that NSS provides opportunities not only to serve society but also to develop valuable personal and leadership qualities.

NSS Special Camp Certificates Distributed
As part of the programme, certificates were distributed to students who had participated in the NSS Special Camp during the academic year 2025–2026.
The recognition appreciated the commitment and involvement of the volunteers who had taken part in the camp. Furthermore, it motivated other students to participate actively in future NSS Special Camps and community-oriented programmes.
Seven-Day Special Camp Experience
Ms. Priya, a third-year Computer Science student, shared her experiences from the seven-day NSS Special Camp.
She explained the various activities carried out during the camp and shared her personal learning experiences with the gathering. Her interaction provided fellow volunteers with a student perspective on the value of participating in an NSS Special Camp.
Moreover, she encouraged the students to take part enthusiastically in future NSS programmes and make full use of the opportunities available through the scheme.
Learning Through NSS Activities
The programme highlighted how participation in NSS can contribute to the overall development of students.
