Life Skill Session was organised by the PG & Research Department of English (SF) through the Phoenix Literary Association at Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, on 23 September 2026.
The engaging and interactive programme was held at 10:30 a.m. in the Seminar Hall, G.J. Block. It focused on equipping students with practical life skills related to communication, relationships, emotional regulation and personal well-being.
Life Skill Session 2026
The Life Skill Session was designed to provide students with practical strategies to manage personal, interpersonal and academic challenges.
The programme encouraged students to understand the importance of effective communication, healthy boundaries, emotional awareness and stress management in everyday life.
Resource Person – Ms. R. Rohini
The Resource Person was Ms. R. Rohini, M.A., M.Sc., M.Phil., a Counselling Psychologist from St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi.
Drawing on her professional experience, she addressed several challenges commonly encountered by students and shared practical approaches for handling them constructively.
Her interaction made the programme accessible, engaging and relevant to students.
Bridging Communication Gaps
An important topic addressed during the Life Skill Session was effective communication.
Ms. Rohini explained the need to identify and bridge communication gaps in everyday interactions. Students were encouraged to communicate their thoughts and concerns clearly while also developing the ability to listen and understand others.
The discussion highlighted how healthy communication can strengthen interpersonal relationships and reduce misunderstandings.
Setting Healthy Boundaries in Relationships
The Resource Person discussed the importance of setting appropriate boundaries in relationships.
Students were encouraged to recognise their personal limits and understand the value of mutual respect.
The discussion helped them appreciate that healthy boundaries can contribute to balanced relationships and emotional well-being.
Managing Overthinking
Overthinking was another major topic covered during the programme.
The Life Skill Session helped students understand how repetitive thoughts can affect concentration, emotional balance and daily functioning.
Ms. Rohini shared practical approaches to help students manage excessive thinking and focus their attention more constructively.
Coping with High-Stress Situations
The session also focused on maintaining composure during challenging and high-stress situations.
Students were introduced to strategies for recognising emotional responses and responding to stressful circumstances in a calmer manner.
The discussion emphasised the importance of developing healthy coping skills rather than allowing stress to overwhelm decision-making.
Awareness on Emotional Distress and Seeking Support
Ms. Rohini also addressed serious emotional distress, including suicidal thoughts, in an appropriate counselling context.
Students were encouraged to recognise the importance of seeking timely support from trusted people and qualified professionals when facing overwhelming emotional difficulties.
The discussion reinforced that reaching out for support is an important part of protecting personal well-being during periods of severe distress.
Box Breathing Technique
A practical highlight of the Life Skill Session was the demonstration of the Box Breathing technique.
The Resource Person guided students through the breathing exercise as a simple technique for mindfulness and emotional regulation.
This practical demonstration helped students understand how controlled breathing can be incorporated into situations where they need to settle their attention and regain composure.
Interactive Activities for Students
The programme was designed as an interactive learning experience rather than a conventional lecture.
Ms. Rohini involved the students in activities that helped reinforce the concepts discussed during the session.
The interactive approach encouraged active participation and made the ideas easier to understand and relate to everyday situations.
Life Skills for Academic and Personal Well-Being
The Life Skill Session demonstrated that life skills are closely connected with both personal and academic development.
Effective communication, emotional awareness, stress management and healthy interpersonal relationships can help students respond more constructively to challenges.
