Jaggery Unit Visit – Experiential Learning for Commerce Students

The Jaggery Unit Visit was organized by the Department of Commerce (Self-Financing) of Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi on 02 and 03 March 2026 from 09.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m. The two-day industrial visit was arranged to provide postgraduate students with practical exposure to agro-based manufacturing and rural industrial management.

A total of 45 students from I M.Com and II M.Com participated in the programme along with four faculty members. The Jaggery Unit Visit was conducted in Kerala as part of the postgraduate curriculum to strengthen industry–academia interaction and enhance experiential learning.

Purpose of the Jaggery Unit Visit

Industrial visits are an essential component of management and commerce education because they connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. The Jaggery Unit Visit was designed to provide students with firsthand understanding of traditional and semi-mechanized production processes used in rural manufacturing industries.

The visit helped students understand how small-scale industries operate within local economies and how agricultural products are transformed into commercially viable goods.

Objectives of the Visit

The primary objectives of the Jaggery Unit Visit included:

  • Understanding the operational framework of jaggery production
  • Analyzing production planning and cost components
  • Studying pricing mechanisms in agro-based industries
  • Examining quality control and packaging systems
  • Bridging classroom knowledge with industrial practice

These objectives ensured that students could observe business operations directly and evaluate the managerial aspects of production.

Orientation and Introduction to the Industry

The Jaggery Unit Visit began with an induction session conducted by the factory representatives. During the orientation, the officials explained the background of the jaggery manufacturing unit and its contribution to the local rural economy.

Students were introduced to:

  • The history and growth of the unit
  • Sources of raw materials, particularly sugarcane procurement
  • Traditional and semi-mechanized production techniques
  • Challenges faced by agro-based small industries

The session provided students with an overview of how rural manufacturing enterprises contribute to agricultural value addition.

Observation of the Production Process

A major highlight of the Jaggery Unit Visit was the guided factory tour, during which students observed the complete production cycle of jaggery manufacturing.

The process included the following stages:

  • Extraction of sugarcane juice
  • Filtration and removal of impurities
  • Boiling and concentration in large furnaces
  • Clarification of the syrup
  • Moulding and cooling of jaggery blocks
  • Packaging and storage procedures

Students also learned how production efficiency is maintained through temperature control, fuel management, and proper hygiene standards. These technical aspects play a significant role in ensuring product quality and consistency.

Insights into Production Management and Cost Control

The Jaggery Unit Visit provided valuable insights into cost management and production planning in small-scale industries. Factory officials explained how factors such as raw material cost, labour wages, fuel consumption, and transportation influence the overall pricing of jaggery.

Students observed how efficient production planning helps maintain profitability despite seasonal fluctuations in sugarcane supply and market demand.

Discussions were also held regarding:

  • Seasonal production cycles
  • Market demand variations
  • Supply chain logistics
  • Transportation and distribution systems

These discussions enabled students to understand the financial and operational challenges faced by rural enterprises.

Learning Outcomes of the Visit

The Jaggery Unit Visit significantly enhanced the learning experience of postgraduate commerce students. The visit enabled them to:

  • Gain practical knowledge of agro-based manufacturing
  • Understand cost structures and value addition processes
  • Analyze supply chain and distribution practices
  • Evaluate the management of rural small-scale industries
  • Relate theoretical concepts in commerce to industrial applications

Such field-based learning experiences are invaluable in preparing students for professional roles in business and management sectors.

Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

The Jaggery Unit Visit also highlighted the importance of industry–academia collaboration. By interacting with industry professionals, students were able to understand practical challenges faced by entrepreneurs and manufacturers.

These interactions encouraged students to think critically about production systems, marketing strategies, and financial planning within small-scale industries.
