Report on Skill Development Training – Crafting a Resume & Crushing an Interview

Interview Skills and professional resume preparation were the focus of a Skill Development Training Programme organised by the Department of Business Administration, Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, on 31 August 2026.

The programme, titled “Crafting a Resume & Crushing an Interview”, was conducted from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Room No. 229.

The training aimed to enhance students’ employability and career-readiness skills by providing practical guidance on resume preparation and successful interview performance.

The session also encouraged students to improve their communication, presentation, confidence and professional approach.

Furthermore, the programme helped students understand the importance of creating a strong first impression during the recruitment process and preparing themselves according to the expectations of employers.

Objectives of the Skill Development Training

The programme was organised to prepare students for important stages of the recruitment and selection process.

The major objectives were:

  • Develop effective resume-writing skills
  • Prepare students for job interviews
  • Improve communication skills
  • Strengthen interview confidence
  • Develop professional presentation skills
  • Create awareness about employer expectations
  • Improve students’ overall employability
  • Develop a professional approach towards recruitment
  • Help students create a positive first impression
  • Strengthen career readiness

Thus, the programme focused on practical skills that can help students approach future employment opportunities with greater confidence.

Importance of Career Readiness

Career readiness has become increasingly important for students entering a competitive employment environment.

Academic qualifications provide an important foundation. However, employers also look for candidates who can communicate effectively, present themselves professionally and demonstrate confidence.

Therefore, students need to prepare themselves for the recruitment process well before completing their studies.

The training programme helped participants understand this requirement and encouraged them to develop the necessary professional competencies.

Crafting an Effective Resume

Resume preparation formed a major component of the training.

A resume is often the first document through which an employer evaluates a candidate.

Therefore, it needs to present the candidate’s education, skills, achievements and relevant experiences in a clear and professional manner.

Students were guided on the importance of preparing an effective resume that communicates their strengths appropriately.

Furthermore, they understood that a resume should help an employer quickly identify the candidate’s suitability for an opportunity.

Creating a Strong First Impression

The programme highlighted the importance of creating a strong first impression during recruitment.

A candidate begins creating an impression even before attending an interview.

The quality of the resume, clarity of communication and professional approach can influence how recruiters perceive an applicant.

Therefore, students were encouraged to pay attention to every stage of the recruitment process.

A professional and well-prepared approach can help candidates present themselves with greater confidence.

Professional Resume Presentation

Students were encouraged to understand the importance of presenting information in a resume in a clear and organised manner.

An effective resume should make important information easy for recruiters to understand.

It should highlight the candidate’s qualifications and abilities without unnecessary complexity.

Moreover, students need to ensure that the information provided is accurate and relevant.

The session therefore helped students recognise resume writing as an important professional communication skill.

Preparing for Job Interviews

The second major focus of the programme was Interview Skills.

Students were guided on the importance of preparing adequately before attending a job interview.

Preparation can include understanding the organisation, reviewing the job requirements and being ready to explain one’s qualifications and skills.

Furthermore, candidates should be prepared to answer questions clearly and confidently.

The programme encouraged students to view interview preparation as a systematic process rather than a last-minute activity.

Building Interview Confidence

Confidence plays a major role in interview performance.

Students may possess good academic knowledge and skills but still struggle to communicate them effectively if they lack confidence.

The training therefore encouraged students to develop self-belief through preparation and practice.

Students were motivated to approach interviews with a positive mindset and communicate their abilities confidently.

Moreover, regular practice can help reduce hesitation and improve overall interview performance.

Communication Skills for Interviews

Effective communication is one of the most important skills evaluated during interviews.

Students need to listen carefully to questions and respond in a clear and relevant manner.

The programme encouraged participants to improve their ability to express ideas confidently.

Good communication also involves maintaining clarity, appropriate language and a professional approach.

Therefore, students were encouraged to continuously develop their communication skills through regular practice.

Professional Presentation

The programme also highlighted the importance of professional presentation.

Interview performance depends not only on what candidates say but also on how they present themselves.

Professional behaviour, confidence and respectful interaction can contribute to a positive impression.

Students were encouraged to approach interviews with preparation and professionalism.

This awareness can help them become more comfortable and effective during recruitment interactions.

Understanding Employer Expectations

The training provided students with greater awareness of the expectations of employers.

Organisations generally look for candidates who possess both academic knowledge and workplace competencies.

These may include:

  • Communication Skills
  • Confidence
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-Solving
  • Adaptability
  • Professional Behaviour
  • Positive Attitude
  • Willingness to Learn
  • Responsibility
  • Interpersonal Skills

Understanding these expectations can help students prepare more effectively for future employment.

Developing Employability Skills

The programme focused on improving the overall employability skills of students.

Employability includes a combination of academic knowledge, practical abilities and personal qualities that help individuals perform effectively in professional environments.

Students were encouraged to develop skills that complement their academic qualifications.

Furthermore, the training helped them understand that employability development is a continuous process.

Students who begin preparing early can approach placement and recruitment opportunities with greater confidence.

Importance of Communication and Confidence

Communication and confidence are closely connected during interviews.

Candidates who understand a question but cannot express their answer clearly may find it difficult to demonstrate their actual abilities.

Therefore, students were encouraged to practise speaking clearly and confidently.

Regular participation in presentations, discussions and other academic activities can also help improve communication.

The programme motivated students to use such opportunities to strengthen their professional confidence.

Preparing for Recruitment

The recruitment process can involve several stages, and students need to prepare themselves accordingly.

A professional resume can help candidates reach the interview stage, while effective communication and presentation can influence their performance during the interview.

Therefore, resume preparation and interview training complement each other.

The programme helped students understand this connection and encouraged them to prepare systematically for future recruitment opportunities.

Practical Career Guidance

The practical orientation of the session made the training particularly useful for students.

Instead of viewing resume preparation and interviews only as theoretical concepts, students received guidance relevant to actual recruitment situations.

Such practical exposure can help reduce uncertainty when students attend interviews in the future.

Moreover, career-oriented training enables students to identify areas where they need further preparation and improvement.

Developing a Professional Approach

Professional success requires more than academic knowledge.

Students also need to demonstrate responsibility, communication, confidence, adaptability and a willingness to learn.

The training encouraged participants to begin developing these qualities during their college education.

A professional approach can help students handle interviews, workplace interactions and future career responsibilities more effectively.

Therefore, the programme contributed to both immediate interview preparation and long-term professional development.

Career Planning and Self-Assessment

Resume preparation also provides students with an opportunity to assess their own strengths.

When preparing a resume, students need to identify their qualifications, skills, achievements and experiences.

This process can help them recognise both their strengths and areas that require improvement.

Consequently, students can plan their skill development more effectively.

The training therefore encouraged participants to approach career preparation with greater clarity and self-awareness.

Preparing BBA Students for the Workplace

The programme was particularly relevant for students of Business Administration.

BBA graduates may pursue careers in diverse areas such as management, marketing, finance, human resources, sales, operations and entrepreneurship.

Across these areas, communication and professional presentation remain important.

Therefore, developing strong Interview Skills can help BBA students prepare themselves for a wide range of employment opportunities.

The training also encouraged them to connect their academic knowledge with workplace expectations.
