International Mountain Day 2025

The International Mountain Day 2025 was observed with great enthusiasm at Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi on 11th December 2025, from 11.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. at the Swami Vivekananda Block. The programme was organised by NSS Units 54, 56 & 145, aligning with the global movement to raise awareness about the critical importance of mountains in sustaining life on Earth.

Every year, International Mountain Day is celebrated on December 11, following the initiative of the United Nations (UN) and the Mountain Partnership, an international alliance formed in 2002 to protect mountain ecosystems, promote sustainable development, and uplift mountain communities. This year’s theme, “May Life Blossom Like a Mountain in Spring”, encouraged students to appreciate the resilience, beauty, and ecological value of mountains while inspiring them to cultivate similar strength and positivity within their own lives.

Objective of the Programme

The celebration aimed to spread awareness among students regarding:

• the role of mountains in the global water cycle,
• the biodiversity supported by mountain ecosystems,
• the socio-economic significance for communities living in mountainous regions, and
• the need for conservation practices to preserve these fragile landscapes.

Leadership and Guidance

The event was conducted under the insightful leadership of:

Both encouraged the NSS students to become ambassadors of environmental sustainability. Their continued support empowers the NSS units to conduct impactful programmes throughout the academic year, promoting social responsibility, environmental awareness, and character development among students.

Special Address by Dr. Muthu Sheeba

The highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Dr. Muthu Sheeba, Associate Professor, Department of Botany. In her engaging and informative session, she explained key points such as:

The contribution of mountains to global water resources
Mountains act as “water towers,” storing and supplying fresh water to nearly half of the world’s population. Snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and natural springs play a vital role in regulating seasonal water availability.

The ecological richness of mountain environments
Mountains host numerous endemic plant and animal species. Many of these ecosystems are highly sensitive to climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable development.

The importance of conservation
Dr. Sheeba emphasized the importance of maintaining mountain ecosystems to ensure climate balance, biodiversity protection, and sustainable livelihoods for mountain communities.

Her talk encouraged students to think critically about environmental stewardship and inspired them to take part in eco-friendly initiatives.

Participation of NSS Volunteers

A total of 60 NSS volunteers attended the session. Their active participation demonstrated their commitment to the values of environmental awareness and civic responsibility. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions, asked questions on global warming, glacier melting, and forest conservation, and gained a deeper understanding of how individual actions contribute to global sustainability.

சர்வதேச மலைகள் தினம் -டிசம்பர் 11

தூத்துக்குடி காமராஜ் கல்லூரி(தன்னாட்சி) நாட்டுநலப்பணித்திட்டம் அணி எண்கள் 54, 56 & 145 சார்பாக சர்வதேச மலைகள் தினம் இன்று (டிசம்பர் -11) வியாழக்கிழமை கொண்டாடப்பட்டது.

மலைகளைப் பாதுகாக்கவும், மலைகளில் வாழும் மக்களின் வாழ்வை மேம்படுத்தவும், சுற்றுச்சூழலை பாதுகாக்கவும் “மலைகளின் கூட்டாளி” அமைப்பு 2002 -ல் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. அன்று முதல் ஐ.நா அவை டிசம்பர் -11 ஆம் நாளை சர்வதேச மலைகள் நாளாக அறிவித்து மக்களுக்கு விழிப்புணர்வு ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

கல்லூரி முதல்வர் முனைவர் பானுமதி, துணை முதல்வர் செந்தில் ஆகியோரின் வழிகாட்டலில் நாட்டுநலப்பணித்திட்டம் சார்பாக “வாழ்க்கை மலையினைப் போல அதில் வசந்தம் வளரட்டும்” என்னும் தலைப்பில் காமராஜ் கல்லூரி தாவரவியல் துறை பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் முத்து ஷீபா அவர்கள் மாணவர்களுக்கு கருத்துகளை வழங்கினார்கள்.

நீர் சுழற்சியில் மலைகளின் பங்களிப்பு குறித்தும்,உயிர்கள் வாழ்வதற்கு மலைகளின் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பெறும் பங்களிப்பு குறித்தும் மாணவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார்கள். இந்நிகழ்வில் 60 நாட்டு நலப்பணித்திட்ட மாணவர்கள் பங்குபெற்றனர்.

இந்நிகழ்வை நாட்டுநலப்பணித்திட்ட அலுவலர்கள் திரு பா. ஆனந்த் (அணிஎண் -54), திரு மா. அய்யனுராஜ் (அணி எண் -56), முனைவர் ச. மாரிமுத்து ஆகியோர் செய்திருந்தனர்.
