Industrial Visit: V. O. C Port, Thoothukudi – BBA Dept.

The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to port operations, logistics, and the management structure of one of India’s major ports. A total of 55 II Year BBA Shipping and Logistics students participated in this enriching experience.

The visit began at the V.O.C Information Centre, where an introductory video on the port’s operations was screened. Students also viewed a miniature model of the VOC Port, which helped them understand the layout of berths, entry channels, storage yards, and administrative buildings.

Following this, a Port Infrastructure Tour was conducted. Students gained insights into:

Entry Gate & Security Checkpoint
Container Yard
Cranes & Transit Shed
Coal Terminal

A highlight of the tour was access to a cargo ship, where students observed the loading and unloading operations, deepening their understanding of real-time shipping logistics.

The next visit was to St. John’s CFS (Container Freight Station). Here, students gained a comprehensive understanding of logistics operations, cargo handling, container management, and the customs clearance process involved in international trade. Mr. Maria Thomas, Import Operations Manager at St. John’s CFS, gave a detailed practical explanation of import and export procedures in the industry. This facility plays a vital role in the export-import supply chain.

This industrial visit proved to be a valuable learning experience, offering direct exposure to marine and port operations. The hands-on observation of the infrastructure and the onboard ship visit significantly enhanced students’ understanding of the maritime industry.
