7 Inspiring Outcomes of Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp

Eye Check Up Camp

The Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp was successfully organized by the Post Graduate and Research Department of Microbiology, in association with the Youth Red Cross (YRC), Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, on 30th December 2025 from 10.00 AM to 3.00 PM at the Golden Jubilee Block.

The programme aimed to create awareness about eye health and provide free vision screening services to students, teaching staff, and non-teaching staff. In the present digital era, eye-related issues have become increasingly common, making initiatives such as the Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp highly relevant and beneficial for the academic community.

Objectives of the Programme

The Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp was organized with the following objectives:

  • To create awareness about the importance of eye hygiene and vision care
  • To educate participants on preventive measures for maintaining good eyesight
  • To promote regular eye check-ups for early detection of eye disorders
  • To provide free vision screening and basic eye examinations
  • To encourage a healthy lifestyle among students and staff

Inaugural Session

The programme commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by Ms. Sneha, I M.Sc. Microbiology, who cordially welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students. She highlighted the importance of organizing health awareness programmes within educational institutions and emphasized the role of preventive healthcare.

This was followed by a vision care awareness talk delivered by Ms. G. Swetha, II M.Sc. Microbiology. In her address, she stressed the significance of maintaining eye hygiene, adopting healthy screen habits, and undergoing regular eye check-ups. Her informative speech set a strong foundation for the Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp.

Honouring the Resource Person

As a mark of appreciation and recognition, Dr. R. Amster Regin Lawrence, Department YRC Coordinator, honoured Mr. S. Ramakrishna Gandhi, B.E., Public Relations Officer, The Eye Foundation, Thoothukudi, by presenting a memento. The honour acknowledged his valuable contribution to vision care awareness and community service.

Expert Session on Vision Health

Mr. S. Ramakrishna Gandhi delivered a concise and informative talk focusing on various aspects of eye health. During the Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp, he highlighted:

  • The importance of routine eye examinations
  • Common eye problems caused by excessive digital screen usage
  • Preventive measures to reduce digital eye strain
  • The role of early diagnosis in preventing vision loss
  • Healthy practices to maintain long-term eye health

His session was highly engaging and informative, helping participants understand the importance of prioritizing eye care in their daily lives.

Support from Alumni

The programme received valuable support from the department alumni, Mr. U. Balasanthanam, B.Sc., Microbiologist, R.K. Pharmacy Pvt. Ltd., India. He actively assisted in coordinating the camp and interacting with participants, demonstrating the strong alumni association and commitment toward student welfare initiatives.

Eye Screening and Beneficiaries

Following the awareness session, the eye check-up camp was conducted with the support of The Eye Foundation – Super Speciality Eye Hospitals, Thoothukudi. Qualified professionals carried out vision screening and basic eye examinations for all participants.

A total of 169 beneficiaries were screened during the Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp, which included:

  • 40 teaching staff members
  • 106 students from various departments
  • 23 non-teaching staff members

The screening helped identify individuals who required further medical consultation and encouraged proactive eye care practices.

Feedback and Institutional Support

The participants expressed positive feedback regarding the usefulness of the awareness session and the eye screening services provided during the Vision Care Awareness and Eye Check Up Camp. Many appreciated the initiative for addressing an essential aspect of health that is often overlooked.

The college management extended full support and provided all necessary facilities, which played a vital role in the smooth and successful organization of the camp.
