Extension Activity : Reach the Unreached – Commerce Dept.

On 20th, July 2024, the Department of Commerce (SF) organized an extension activity titled “Reach the Unreached” at Anbu Ullangal Mananala Maruvazhvu Mayyam, an old age home dedicated to caring for the elderly and mentally challenged. The team Led by the Head of the Department, Dr. V. Gopalakrishnan and supported by the four Youth Red Cross Program Officers along with a group of enthusiastic students, the initiative aimed to provide meals and engage with the residents to enhance their mental well-being.
The visit commenced with a warm welcome from the staff at the facility, followed by an introduction where the Department Head outlined the purpose of the visit. The participants, including students and YRC Program Officers, actively participated in preparing and distributing nutritious meals tailored to the dietary needs of the residents. This act of service was not just about providing food but also about offering a sense of care and attention to the elderly and mentally challenged individuals.
Beyond meal distribution, the participants spent quality time with the residents, engaging them in conversations, listening to their stories, and participating in various activities such as singing, dancing, and games. These interactions were designed to bring joy and break the monotony of the residents’ daily routines. Additionally, the participants shared basic health and hygiene tips, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and regular health check-ups to maintain well-being.
The impact of this visit was profound. The residents expressed their gratitude and happiness, appreciating the care and companionship provided by the visitors. For the students and YRC POs, the experience was enriching and educational, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and social responsibility. They left with a greater understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in society and a renewed commitment to community service.
About 210 elderly were the beneficiaries.
