Educational Institutional Visit 2025 – 1 Insightful Learning Experience for Criminology Students

Educational Institutional Visit

The Department of Criminology at Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, organized an Educational Institutional Visit on October 25, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. A total of 39 students from I B.Sc. Criminology and Forensic Science took part in this informative field visit. The students were accompanied by faculty members Ms. Aiswarya Raj K. R. and Mr. Roshan Goldwin, who guided them throughout the program.

The visit was conducted at the Thoothukudi Railway Station, one of the most active transport hubs in the region. It was designed to provide students with practical exposure to real-time law enforcement procedures, safety operations, and the functioning of multiple security agencies working within the railway system.

Objective of the Educational Institutional Visit

The primary objective of the Educational Institutional Visit was to enhance students’ understanding of the functioning of law enforcement and safety management in public spaces, especially within transport systems.

The visit aimed to:

  • Provide first-hand knowledge about railway security operations and public safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate the role of Railway Police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) in ensuring commuter safety and crime prevention.
  • Expose students to the procedures involved in child protection and anti-trafficking efforts at transit points.
  • Bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications in criminology and forensic science.
  • Encourage students to pursue professional excellence in law enforcement and safety administration.

This initiative reflected the department’s focus on experiential learning, where students actively observe and understand the systems that maintain safety, order, and justice in society.

Details of the Visit

The Educational Institutional Visit began at 9:30 AM at the Thoothukudi Railway Station. Faculty members introduced the students to the railway authorities and briefed them about the day’s schedule and objectives.

The visit was structured into three major sessions, handled by different agencies working within the railway ecosystem:

Railway Police Session – Officers from the Railway Police presented a detailed talk on railway safety, passenger conduct, and the importance of public awareness. They explained how vigilance and community cooperation help prevent thefts, accidents, and other railway-related crimes. Students learned about patrolling methods, reporting procedures, and emergency response techniques.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) Session – The RPF officials discussed passenger protection, surveillance systems, and the use of technology in modern railway security. Students were shown how CCTV monitoring and crowd control systems help maintain security at platforms and within trains. The officers also explained how RPF collaborates with local police to address criminal cases and ensure smooth travel for the public.

Child Protection Cell Session – Representatives from the Child Protection Cell engaged students in a meaningful discussion about preventing child trafficking and promoting child welfare. They shared real-life cases and explained how coordination between different government departments helps identify and rescue vulnerable children at railway stations.

Each session included an open discussion, allowing students to ask questions about crime investigation, public awareness campaigns, and social responsibility.

Hands-on Learning and Practical Exposure

The Educational Institutional Visit offered a hands-on experience that went beyond theoretical learning. Students were able to see how law enforcement agencies collaborate to ensure safety in one of the busiest public infrastructures.

Through direct interaction with officers and observing live operations, they gained an understanding of:

  • How surveillance and patrol units function in real time.
  • The challenges faced by railway authorities in preventing crimes.
  • The importance of quick decision-making in safety management.
  • Procedures for handling missing persons and child rescue operations.
  • The role of interdisciplinary coordination among police, RPF, and welfare departments.

Such exposure enabled students to relate classroom theories to real-life crime management systems, reinforcing the practical application of criminology concepts.

Academic and Professional Impact

This visit played an important role in broadening students’ academic and professional outlook. By observing the functioning of law enforcement agencies, students developed a deeper appreciation for the complexities of maintaining safety in public transport systems.

The interaction with the RPF and Railway Police provided them with insights into preventive policing, surveillance technologies, and incident response mechanisms. The session on child protection sensitized students to social issues, human rights, and ethical responsibilities in the field of criminology.

The exposure also inspired many students to consider future careers in railway security, forensic investigation, and social welfare. The visit demonstrated how criminology extends beyond crime studies to include safety administration, crisis management, and community welfare.

Faculty Guidance and Student Engagement

The Educational Institutional Visit was effectively guided by faculty members Ms. Aiswarya Raj K. R. and Mr. Roshan Goldwin, whose mentorship ensured that students engaged actively throughout the day. They facilitated discussions between students and officials, encouraged questions, and helped the participants connect their academic learning with practical experiences.

Students expressed immense appreciation for the visit, highlighting how the real-world exposure deepened their understanding of criminological practices. The interactive format of the sessions kept them interested and motivated to explore more about field applications in criminology and forensic science.

Conclusion

The Educational Institutional Visit to the Thoothukudi Railway Station on October 25, 2025, was a remarkable experiential learning opportunity for the Department of Criminology students. The visit combined practical knowledge with academic learning, helping students observe real-time operations in railway safety, public security, and child protection.

By interacting with law enforcement and welfare professionals, students gained valuable insights into crime prevention, safety management, and community service. The event reflected Kamaraj College’s strong commitment to skill-based and application-oriented education.

The visit concluded at 1:00 PM with appreciation extended to the railway authorities, RPF personnel, and Child Protection Cell representatives for their cooperation and support.

Through this meaningful initiative, the Department of Criminology once again reinforced its mission of preparing students to become responsible professionals dedicated to justice, safety, and human welfare.
