A total of 41 students from II B.Com A, accompanied by two faculty members, actively participated in this academic initiative, which complemented classroom learning with direct industrial experience.

Purpose of the Visit

The Commerce Industrial Visit aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of business operations through observation and interaction with industry professionals.

  • To relate theoretical concepts with practical applications
  • To understand plantation-based industrial operations
  • To observe quality control and production systems
  • To learn about employee participation in management
  • To gain awareness of sustainable business practices

Profile of Kanan Devan Hills Plantations

Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited is a leading tea plantation enterprise headquartered in the Idukki District of Kerala. The company was established in 2005 after Tata Tea Limited exited plantation operations in Munnar. KDHP operates under a unique participatory ownership model and markets its products under the Ripple Tea brand.

The organization produces tea, essential oils, aromatic products, incense sticks, and coffee, catering to domestic and international markets.

Induction and Orientation Session

The visit commenced with an informative induction session led by company officials. Students were briefed on the organizational structure, departmental functions, and workflow of KDHP. The management explained the tea production process in detail, covering leaf processing, fermentation, drying, grading, and packaging.

Special emphasis was given to hygiene standards, safety measures, and quality assurance systems followed throughout the factory premises.

Historical Background and Evolution

KDHP carries a legacy of over 136 years, with origins dating back to the colonial era. On 1 April 2005, the company formally succeeded Tata Tea Limited following a major restructuring initiative during the tea industry downturn.

This transition led to the formation of the world’s largest employee-owned tea plantation company, setting a benchmark for inclusive industrial governance.

Employee Ownership and Management Model

A defining feature observed during the Commerce Industrial Visit was KDHP’s participatory management system.

  • Employees hold nearly 60 percent ownership of shares
  • Almost the entire workforce are shareholders
  • Worker and staff representatives serve on the Board
  • Best-performing employees are nominated as Directors

This model promotes accountability, motivation, and shared responsibility across the organization.

Scale of Operations

KDHP employs more than 12,000 personnel across 12 departments and manages plantations covering 23,783 hectares in the High Ranges of Idukki. The company contributes significantly to Kerala’s tea sector, accounting for 24.3 percent of the cultivation area and 31.5 percent of total tea production.

Retail, Branding, and Digital Expansion

KDHP entered the branded retail segment with the launch of Ripple Tea in 2010. E-commerce operations began in 2015, followed by the launch of an independent online portal in 2020. The company also operates branded retail outlets under the Chai Bazar name in Munnar and Kumily.

Environmental Commitment

The company’s commitment to sustainability was highlighted through its certifications.

  • Rainforest Alliance Certification
  • USDA Organic certification for select estates
  • Fairtrade certification since 2009
  • Trustea certification for all units

These practices reflect KDHP’s ethical and environmentally responsible operations.

Factory Visit and Student Learning

Students were allowed to observe the tea manufacturing process inside the factory. This hands-on exposure helped them understand industrial workflows, quality standards, and logistics. Lunch and refreshments were arranged, ensuring a comfortable learning environment.

Outcome and Conclusion

The Commerce Industrial Visit proved to be an enriching academic experience. It enhanced students’ practical understanding of industrial management, employee ownership, and sustainable business models. The visit successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice, reinforcing the importance of industry exposure in commerce education.
