CAD CAM Workshop Creates 6 Powerful Industry Skills for Chemistry Students

CAD CAM Workshop – Programme Overview

The CAD CAM Workshop was successfully organized by the Department of Chemistry, Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, on 30 January 2026 from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. at the College Auditorium. This industry-focused academic programme was designed to expose undergraduate Chemistry students to modern plastic product manufacturing techniques using CAD/CAM technologies.

The workshop formed part of a two-day learning initiative that combined classroom-based expert lectures with hands-on industrial exposure, enabling students to understand the practical applications of chemistry in manufacturing industries.

Objectives of the CAD CAM Workshop

The primary objective of the CAD CAM Workshop was to bridge the gap between academic chemistry education and industrial manufacturing practices. The programme aimed to:

  • Introduce students to CAD and CAM applications in plastic product manufacturing
  • Enhance industry-oriented technical knowledge among Chemistry students
  • Provide exposure to real-time production and testing environments
  • Promote skill development relevant to industrial careers
  • Encourage students to explore internships and training opportunities

By focusing on applied learning, the workshop strengthened students’ understanding of how chemistry concepts are used in modern industrial processes.

Expert Sessions by CIPET Faculty

The lecture sessions of the CAD CAM Workshop were handled by experienced faculty members from CIPET, Madurai (Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology). The experts delivered detailed presentations on:

  • Basics of plastic materials and polymer science
  • Role of CAD in product design and modelling
  • CAM applications in manufacturing processes
  • Injection moulding and plastic fabrication techniques
  • Quality control and testing of plastic products

The sessions were interactive, allowing students to clarify doubts and understand how CAD/CAM tools are integrated into plastic manufacturing industries.

Relevance of CAD CAM Technology for Chemistry Students

The CAD CAM Workshop highlighted the growing relevance of interdisciplinary skills for Chemistry graduates. Students learned how chemical properties of polymers are directly linked to design, processing, and manufacturing stages.

The workshop helped students understand:

  • How material chemistry influences product design
  • The importance of precision and automation in manufacturing
  • Industrial safety and quality assurance standards
  • Emerging career roles in polymer and plastic industries

Such exposure prepares students for careers in manufacturing, research, and industrial quality control.

Industrial Visit to CIPET Madurai

As part of the CAD CAM Workshop, students visited the Production and Testing Laboratories of CIPET, Madurai, on 4 February 2026. This industrial visit provided students with firsthand experience of industrial operations and advanced laboratory facilities.

During the visit, students observed:

  • Plastic product manufacturing units
  • Testing laboratories for polymer analysis
  • Quality assurance and inspection procedures
  • Industrial machinery and automation systems

The visit reinforced theoretical concepts learned during the lecture sessions and enhanced students’ practical understanding of industrial workflows.

Student Participation and Certification

All UG Chemistry students actively participated in the CAD CAM Workshop and the subsequent industrial visit. Students showed keen interest in learning about industrial applications of chemistry and interacted actively with CIPET faculty and technical staff.

As a recognition of their participation and training, Internship / Training Certificates will be issued by CIPET to all participating students. These certificates add significant value to students’ academic profiles and enhance employability.

Programme Coordination and Faculty Support

The workshop was successfully organized under the leadership of Dr. G. Vanmathi, Head of the Department of Chemistry. The coordinated efforts of faculty members ensured smooth execution of lectures, logistics, and the industrial visit.

Strong institutional support and faculty involvement played a crucial role in making the CAD CAM Workshop a meaningful and impactful academic initiative.
