Powerful Guest Lecture on Applications of Chemistry in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy 2025

Applications of Chemistry in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy

The PG and Research Department of Chemistry, Kamaraj College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, successfully organized an insightful guest lecture on “Applications of Chemistry in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy” on 08 December 2025. The programme was conducted from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. at the Seminar Hall, Golden Jubilee Block.

The lecture aimed to create awareness among students about the vital role of chemistry in modern medical diagnostics, disease detection, therapy, and healthcare innovation. The session proved to be highly beneficial for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department.

Inaugural Session and Welcome Address

The guest lecture on Applications of Chemistry in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy began with the traditional Tamilthai Vazhthu, invoking a sense of cultural pride and academic discipline. Following this, Miss E. Chermaramya extended a warm welcome to the gathering and briefly highlighted the purpose of the guest lecture.

She emphasized the importance of connecting classroom knowledge with real-world medical applications and expressed gratitude to the management and department for arranging such an enriching academic programme.

Introduction of the Resource Person

The resource person for the day, Dr. G. Arunkumar from Arun Biolab, Thoothukudi, was formally introduced by Dr. N. Chandra Lekha, Head of the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Arunkumar was honoured with a shawl as a mark of respect and appreciation. The Head of the Department highlighted the speaker’s expertise in biochemical research and diagnostic applications and expressed confidence that the lecture would greatly benefit the students.

Key Highlights of the Guest Lecture

In his detailed and engaging lecture, Dr. G. Arunkumar explained how chemistry forms the backbone of modern medical diagnostics and therapeutic practices. He spoke in simple and clear language, making complex scientific concepts easy to understand for students.

The key areas discussed included:

  • Biochemical living systems and their role in understanding human health and disease
  • Chemical principles behind diagnostic tools such as blood tests, imaging agents, and biomarkers
  • Drug development and therapeutic chemistry, including formulation and targeted drug delivery
  • Interdisciplinary approaches combining chemistry, biology, and medicine in healthcare

The speaker emphasized how chemistry supports early disease detection, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment, thereby improving patient outcomes.

Student Interaction and Learning Outcomes

The lecture was highly interactive, with students actively participating by asking questions and sharing their thoughts. Both UG and PG students gained valuable insights into career opportunities in medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical research, and laboratory sciences.

Students learned how theoretical concepts studied in chemistry are applied practically in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research institutions. The session also motivated students to explore higher studies and research in medical and biochemical fields.

Importance of Chemistry in Healthcare

Dr. Arunkumar highlighted that chemistry plays a crucial role in:

  • Medical diagnostics through chemical reagents and analytical techniques
  • Therapeutic drug design and formulation
  • Clinical laboratory testing and quality control
  • Innovations in healthcare technology

He encouraged students to develop interdisciplinary skills to meet the growing demands of the healthcare sector.

Vote of Thanks and Conclusion

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Vijaya Sankar, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, faculty members, organizing committee, and students for their active involvement.

The guest lecture on Applications of Chemistry in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy was a grand success and significantly enhanced the academic exposure of students. The event strengthened the department’s commitment to bridging academic learning with practical healthcare applications.
