About Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited
Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited is a reputed Indian enterprise engaged in tea plantation and consumer goods manufacturing, headquartered in the Idukki district of Kerala. The company was established in 2005 following the strategic withdrawal of Tata Tea Limited from plantation operations in Munnar.
As part of a major restructuring initiative, Tata Tea Ltd transferred its plantation assets to the Kanan Devan Hills region under an innovative Participatory Management System. Today, KDHP markets its products under the well known Ripple Tea brand, offering a wide range of teas, essential oils, aromatic products, incense sticks, and coffee for both domestic and international markets.
Induction Session and Industrial Orientation
The Industrial Visit commenced with an informative and interactive induction session conducted by company representatives. During this session, students were introduced to the organizational structure and operational framework of KDHP.
The officials explained the various stages involved in tea production, including leaf collection, processing, quality assessment, packaging, and distribution. Special emphasis was placed on the company’s strict adherence to hygiene standards, quality assurance practices, and safety protocols followed across all factory premises.
Company Background and Legacy
KDHP carries forward a rich legacy spanning over 136 years, tracing its origins back to the British colonial era. The company formally succeeded Tata Tea Limited on 01 April 2005, when Tata Tea reoriented its business focus towards branded tea products and exited large scale plantation management.
During the tea industry downturn of 2004 to 2005, Tata Tea Ltd undertook a comprehensive restructuring exercise. This resulted in the formation of KDHP as the world’s largest employee owned tea plantation enterprise. Nearly 60 percent of the company’s share capital is owned by employees, and about 99.9 percent of the workforce are shareholders.
This pioneering concept was introduced by the Founding Managing Director, Late Mr. T. V. Alexander. KDHP currently employs over 12,000 personnel across 12 functional departments and manages plantations covering 23,783 hectares in the High Ranges of Idukki District.
Participatory Management and Governance
A distinctive feature of KDHP is its inclusive governance structure. Under its three tier participatory framework:
- One worker representative serves on the Board of Directors
- One staff representative is included in management decisions
- Best Worker and Best Staff are nominated to the Board in the following year
This model ensures transparency, accountability, and active employee involvement in decision making.
Business Expansion and Operations
Branded Operations
In 2010, KDHP introduced its consumer facing brand Ripple Tea, expanding its retail presence across Munnar and other regions of Kerala.
E Commerce Operations
The company entered digital retail in 2015 and strengthened its online presence in 2020 by launching an independent e commerce portal for Ripple Tea products.
Retail Outlet Operations
KDHP ventured into branded retailing in 2018 by opening three Chai Bazar outlets in Munnar, followed by franchise expansion in Kumily in 2019.
Environmental Responsibility and Certifications
KDHP has consistently demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices.
- Rainforest Alliance Certification for sustainable tea cultivation
- USDA Organic certification for 300 acres at Top Station
- Fairtrade certification for Chundavurrai estate since 2009
- Trustea certification for all estates and factories
Factory Visit and Practical Exposure
After the induction session, students were provided with lunch and refreshments. They were later permitted to observe the tea manufacturing process inside the factory, gaining practical insights into each stage of production.
The direct exposure helped students relate academic concepts to real industrial practices, particularly in operations management, quality control, and supply chain processes.
