Inauguration of Coastal Clean Up Drive at Thoothukudi

The Inauguration of Coastal Clean Up Drive was successfully organized on 17th September 2025 from 7.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. at the Gulf of Mannar coastal area in Thoothukudi District. The program covered both Muthunagar Beach and Harbour Beach, two important coastal stretches that face constant challenges due to plastic and other waste accumulation.

This coastal initiative was part of a large-scale effort to promote environmental awareness and instill a sense of responsibility among students and the community. With the collaboration of various stakeholders, the event highlighted the importance of protecting marine biodiversity and preserving the pristine nature of coastal ecosystems.

Objectives of the Coastal Clean Up Drive

The key objective of the Inauguration of Coastal Clean Up Drive was to educate participants on the harmful effects of plastic pollution and other non-biodegradable waste. The program aimed to:

  • Spread awareness on the significance of clean beaches and oceans
  • Involve students in hands-on environmental action
  • Encourage the reduction of plastic usage in daily life
  • Strengthen community participation in sustainable practices

Participation and Collective Efforts

The Coastal Clean Up Drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, staff, and volunteers. They actively collected plastic bottles, polythene covers, and other discarded waste from the shoreline. This collective effort not only restored the beauty of Muthunagar Beach and Harbour Beach but also set a strong example for civic responsibility.

Creating Environmental Awareness

Through the Inauguration of Coastal Clean Up Drive, students understood the importance of safeguarding marine life. The Gulf of Mannar region is home to diverse corals, fish species, and sea turtles, all of which are threatened by plastic pollution. The event served as a reminder that protecting oceans is directly linked to sustaining human life and future generations.

Impact of the Program

The clean up drive had a visible and immediate impact. Large amounts of waste were cleared from the coastal area, making the beaches cleaner and safer. More importantly, the program ignited a sense of commitment among the participants to avoid single-use plastics, take part in future clean up activities, and spread the message of environmental responsibility to others.

Commitment for a Sustainable Future

The Inauguration of Coastal Clean Up Drive was more than just a one-day activity. It symbolized the beginning of continuous efforts by the college community to contribute toward ocean conservation. The success of this program reflected the dedication of students, faculty members, and local bodies in making sustainability a collective mission.
