The Department of Economics was established in the year 1968 with the launch of the B.A. Economics programme. Demonstrating academic growth and commitment to higher education, the department was elevated to the status of a Postgraduate Department in 1986 with the introduction of the M.A. Economics programme.
From its inception, the medium of instruction for B.A. Economics has been Tamil, which has not only made the subject more accessible to regional students but has also enabled them to benefit from Tamil Nadu Government stipends and receive preferential consideration for state government job opportunities under the PSTM (Person Studied in Tamil Medium) scheme.
In response to increasing demand and to extend educational access, the department introduced a self-financed B.A. Economics stream in the year 2016. This initiative has provided more students the opportunity to pursue a career in economics and public policy.
The department is supported by a team of 8 dedicated faculty members, of whom 4 serve under the aided stream while the remaining faculty members contribute under the self-supporting stream. Their collective expertise ensures a robust academic experience for the students.
A major milestone in the department’s academic journey was its elevation as a full-fledged Research Department in 2014. Since then, it has been successfully guiding both part-time and full-time research scholars, contributing to knowledge creation and scholarly research in the field of economics.
